Ashwini Vaishnaw says India could see homegrown smartphone brands in the next 12–18 months

Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has said India is likely to produce its own global smartphone brands within 12 to 18 months, signalling a push to move from manufacturing to brand-building as part of the country’s technology self-reliance drive.

What the IT Minister said

Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has said that India is expected to see its own global smartphone brands emerge within the next 12 to 18 months, according to a report from The Times of India. The remarks were made during the World Economic Forum (WEF) 2026, where Vaishnaw indicated that groundwork has been completed to support this shift.

The statement reflects a broader policy ambition: India has already become a major manufacturing base for smartphones, but building globally competitive Indian consumer brands is a different challenge. It involves not only producing devices but also developing product roadmaps, industrial design, camera and chipset strategies, distribution, servicing networks, and marketing at scale.

Why this is a meaningful shift

For years, much of India’s smartphone growth has been driven by global brands that assemble or manufacture locally, supported by incentives and an expanding supplier ecosystem. A transition toward Indian-owned brands—if it materialises—would imply higher value capture within the country across IP, software integration, and channel economics.

It could also change the competitive landscape in the mid-range segment, where Indian firms would need to balance aggressive pricing with differentiation and long-term support. In a market where consumers increasingly expect frequent OS updates, durable hardware and strong resale value, brand trust becomes as important as specifications.

What to watch in the next year

The key test will be whether upcoming Indian brands can secure component supply at scale, deliver quality and after-sales experience, and sustain product cycles fast enough to compete with established players. Partnerships with chip vendors, contract manufacturers and telecom channels may decide how quickly new brands can ramp up.

If the 12–18 month timeline holds, consumers could begin seeing early launches by late 2026 or mid-2027. Until specific brand names, product plans and ecosystem tie-ups are announced, the comment serves mainly as a directional signal of policy intent and industry readiness rather than a product roadmap.
