National Voters’ Day: PM Modi urges citizens to vote regularly, calls voters ‘Bhagya Vidhata’ of India’s future

New Delhi: On Sunday, 25 January 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi marked National Voters’ Day by urging citizens to take part in elections consistently and with pride, framing voting as a core democratic responsibility rather than a once-in-a-while exercise. In a message posted on X, the Prime Minister said National Voters’ Day is an occasion to deepen faith in India’s democratic values and to appreciate the efforts that keep elections free, fair and inclusive.
Modi described the voter as a “Bhagya Vidhata” — someone who shapes destiny — and said the act of voting is a sacred constitutional right that gives every citizen a direct voice in the country’s direction. He added that the indelible ink on a voter’s finger is not merely a mark, but a badge of honour that reflects participation in the nation’s future and keeps democracy vibrant and purposeful.
National Voters’ Day is observed annually on 25 January to mark the foundation day of the Election Commission of India (ECI), established in 1950. The day is intended to recognise voters, promote awareness about the importance of voting, encourage youth participation and reinforce the idea of universal adult franchise as a pillar of the republic.
Other senior leaders also issued messages on the occasion. Union Home Minister Amit Shah highlighted that every voter holds equal power under the Constitution and said it is a moral responsibility to safeguard the voting system so that no external factor can pollute the process. Union Health Minister J P Nadda reiterated that voting is both a democratic right and a fundamental duty. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, while greeting citizens, praised the Election Commission’s commitment to preserving the sanctity of elections and called for wider participation, especially among the youth.
The theme for National Voters’ Day 2026 is ‘My India, My Vote’, with the tagline ‘Citizen at the Heart of Indian Democracy’. The Election Commission of India, a constitutional authority, supervises and conducts elections, including Lok Sabha and state assembly polls as well as elections to the offices of the President and Vice President.
With the Republic Day week underway, the messaging around voters’ participation and institutional trust has also taken on added significance, as the government and the Election Commission focus on strengthening democratic engagement—particularly among first-time voters and young citizens who are entering the electoral system for the first time.
